About Rocky Fernandez for Hayward City Council 2014
I was born and raised in Hayward. After graduating from UC Berkeley in 2000, I stayed in Hayward because I love this city and I believe in our potential. Hayward is a special place; it’s a diverse community made up of families that have lived here for generations, and newer families that moved here because it’s a great place to raise a family and start a business.
The Recession hit local governments like Hayward hard. I experienced it firsthand as Hayward’s representative on the AC Transit Board. At AC Transit, just like in the city of Hayward, loss of sales tax revenue was compounded by takeaways from the State.
In 2009, while I was Board President, AC Transit had to close a $56 million budget deficit. It was a daunting task and to do it, I knew we had to be smarter about how we used data to make decisions. I’m proud to tell you that AC Transit was among the first transit agencies in the country to use real-time ridership tracking to plan better routes that would preserve access for seniors, students, and riders with disabilities and provide more regular service on our most travelled routes.
I believe Hayward can recover from the Recession. I believe we can fill vacant storefronts downtown and revitalize the South Hayward BART area. To do it, we need to employ 21st century best practices in planning and development. I believe in Hayward’s future. Join me and together let’s build a smart city.
